More Than Massage: How THE SPACE Helps Train Massage Therapists

When you come to THE SPACE for a massage, you might not realize that we're also a place where massage therapists come to learn.

Alongside our everyday massage practice, we teach SoleMassage, our signature style of barefoot massage. Massage therapists travel to Spokane to learn this technique, develop new skills, and bring a different approach to bodywork back to their own clients.

And one of our favorite parts of teaching? Our student clinics, where our clients get to be part of the learning process.

What Is SoleMassage?

SoleMassage is our approach to ashiatsu barefoot massage, a technique that uses the therapist's feet to deliver broad, sustained pressure.

Using overhead bars for balance and control, therapists learn to work with their body weight to create deep, flowing massage that can be adjusted to your comfort and pressure preferences.

It's the work we're known for at THE SPACE, and it's also what we teach other massage therapists through our SoleMassage training program.

Teaching the Work We Love

Massage therapists come to THE SPACE from different backgrounds and with varying levels of experience. Some are completely new to barefoot massage, while others are looking to expand their skills.

During our Foundations training, students learn how to use the overhead bars, apply pressure safely, position their bodies, and connect individual techniques into a complete massage routine.

There's a lot to learn in just a few days!

Students practice on one another, receive hands-on instruction, and gradually put everything together. By the final day, they're ready to practice their new skills with guest clients.

What Happens During a Student Massage Clinic?

Our student clinics take place on the final day of training.

Approved guest clients come in to receive a full SoleMassage routine while students practice under instructor supervision.

Unlike a typical massage appointment, everyone works together in a shared classroom. This allows instructors to observe, answer questions, and offer guidance throughout the session.

The massages generally last around 90 minutes, although we ask guests to allow up to two hours because learning doesn't always follow an exact schedule.

These sessions are especially suited to people who enjoy deeper pressure and are comfortable participating in a classroom setting.

Why Your Feedback Matters

Practicing techniques on other massage therapists is one thing. Working with someone who doesn't already know the routine is another.

Guest clients help students experience what it's like to provide a complete massage, from beginning to end.

Afterward, we ask guests to share a little feedback about their experience. What felt especially good? Was the pressure comfortable? Were there areas that could use more attention?

That feedback, combined with instructor guidance, helps students better understand their work and continue developing their skills.

It's a small but meaningful part of becoming a more confident barefoot massage therapist.

A Massage Studio That's Also a Place to Learn

We love that education is part of what happens at THE SPACE.

Our team spends their days providing massage to clients, but our classroom also gives us an opportunity to share what we know with other professionals.

Teaching keeps us connected to the fundamentals of our work. It encourages us to talk about technique, ask questions, and keep learning ourselves.

And when our clients participate in student clinics, they become part of that process too.

We're grateful for the massage therapists who come here to learn and for the clients who help make that education possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are student clinics open to everyone?

Our student clinics are primarily for current THE SPACE clients who have been approved to participate. If you've never attended one before, you'll need to complete an application and receive approval before booking.

Will I receive a full massage during a student clinic?

Yes! Students practice the complete routine they've learned during training. Your massage will typically last around 90 minutes, but please allow up to two hours for your visit.

Is student clinic massage different from a regular appointment?

Yes. Student clinics are learning experiences, so you can expect a shared classroom environment, instructor supervision, and occasional guidance for the students. The pace may be different from a regular appointment.

Do I need to enjoy deep pressure?

Yes. Our Foundations students are learning deep barefoot massage, so student clinics are best suited to people who are comfortable receiving deeper bodywork. If you prefer lighter pressure, we recommend booking a regular massage instead.

How can I participate in a student clinic?

If you're a current client interested in participating, you can complete our student clinic application. Our team reviews applications to determine whether the clinic is a good fit.
