WE TAKE COZY SERIOUSLY
Why We Use Weighted Blankets During Massage at THE SPACE
Some of the most comforting parts of a massage are the details you may not consciously notice.
At THE SPACE in Spokane, one of those details is our five-pound leaf-shaped weighted blankets. They stay tucked into baskets at the bottom of our massage tables until your therapist places one over you during your session.
They are practical, beautiful and a little unusual… very THE SPACE.
What is a weighted blanket?
A weighted blanket is designed to provide gentle, steady pressure against the body.
Many weighted blankets are large and made for sleeping. Ours are smaller, five-pound blankets shaped like oversized leaves. Their size makes them easy to use as an added layer of comfort during massage.
You may have felt your therapist place something with a little extra heft over you without realizing exactly what it was. That was the leaf.
Why can gentle weight feel calming?
Steady pressure can create a sense of being held, supported and grounded.
For a body that has been moving, working and thinking all day, that extra weight can make it a little easier to settle into the table and let the day go.
How do we use weighted blankets during massage?
Once you are settled on the table, your therapist places the weighted leaf where it can add comfortable, steady pressure without getting in the way of the massage.
It rests over you while your therapist works. There is nothing you need to hold, adjust or do.
The blanket simply adds another layer to the experience.
What are the benefits of a weighted blanket during massage?
During a massage, a weighted blanket can add:
a gentle sense of grounding
steady, comforting pressure
an easier transition from a busy day into rest
The weighted leaf supports the environment around the work.
Does a weighted blanket regulate the nervous system?
It is more accurate to say that gentle, steady pressure may support a calmer and more settled feeling.
Weighted blankets are often used as a form of deep-pressure input, but people respond differently and the science is still developing. A weighted blanket is a comfort tool, not a medical treatment or a replacement for mental health or medical care.
At THE SPACE, we keep the goal simple: help you feel comfortable enough to settle in and receive the massage.
How do weighted blankets fit with our heated tables and blankets?
We take cozy seriously, especially once the cooler Spokane weather arrives.
Our massage tables are heated, and heated blankets come back into regular rotation during the colder months (but theyre alwasy ther when you need them, ac can be a lot sometimes too!) . The weighted leaf adds gentle pressure on top of that warmth.
A heated table underneath you.
A heated blanket over you.
A weighted leaf on top.
It is a small stack of very good decisions.
Why do the small details matter?
A massage begins before the first massage stroke.
The temperature of the table, the weight of the blankets, the bolstering and the way the room feels all affect how easily someone can settle in.
We pay attention to those details because the experience of being on the table matters just as much as the technique itself.
